Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal for Men and Women

Traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing, electrolysis, and plucking are effective hair removal techniques; however, only laser hair removal is permanent. Using the latest technology available, Dr. Lisa Espinoza can remove unwanted hair from virtually any part of your body with unparalleled speed, safety, and efficacy. Each of our lasers is specific to certain skin types and colors of hair, allowing us to treat the full spectrum of skin types more effectively than other laser centers.  It is important to note that hair grows in cycles and only about one-third of a patient’s hair is visible above the skin at any time. Therefore, it is recommended that patients undergo five to eight treatments, spaced several weeks apart, for optimal hair clearance.

How does laser hair removal work?

The Vectus Laser, utilizing high-speed technology, targets and destroys the individual follicles of hair, inhibiting future hair growth. This laser features the largest spot size and most uniform beam of any hair removal device on the market and also utilizes the Skintel™ Melanin Reader™ which allows our laser technicians to safely tailor hair removal treatments to meet the needs of your unique skin type, ethnicity and lifestyle. The safety profile of our Vectus device is second-to-none, as understanding how much melanin is in the skin helps the practitioner better choose treatment settings for superior results, while minimizing the risk of over-treatment.

Is laser hair removal right for me?

Laser hair removal is the gold standard for both men and women looking to remove unwanted body hair from virtually any area of the body with unparalleled speed, safety and efficacy. Not only will it allow you the freedom to be hair-free without shaving, waxing or plucking, it can also greatly reduce the occurrence of ingrown hairs. However, it is important to note that laser hair removal is not effective for individuals with light blond, grey or silver hair. The ideal laser hair removal candidate has light, untanned skin, and dark, coarse hair. Because our goal is to treat you safely yet effectively, we highly recommend that you avoid sun exposure and the use of self-tanning products prior to your treatment.

What does it feel like?

Most patients would describe laser hair removal as mildly uncomfortable, with a sensation similar to that of a warm snapping rubber band. We strongly encourage our patients to arrive approximately 20 minutes prior to their scheduled treatment time so that we can apply a topical numbing agent to the area being treated.

How many treatments will I need?

It is important to note that hair grows in cycles and that hairs in the active growth phase respond better to laser treatments. Optimal clearance depends on several variables, including hair density, color and hormonal factors; therefore, the number of treatments needed will vary. As a general rule, facial hair can require between four and eight treatments spaced every four to six weeks apart whereas the body may require that these treatments be performed every six to eight weeks. With each hair removal treatment, patients can expect to notice a progressive reduction in the amount of hair in the area.

How long should my hair be prior to a treatment?

We ask that you shave the area one day prior to being treated, as hair should be no more than one to two millimeters in length. The shorter your hair is, the safer and less painful the treatment will be. Plucking, waxing or any other depilatory methods should be avoided for at least two weeks prior to laser hair removal and should not be performed at all during the course of your treatments.

Are there any possible side effects?

Most commonly experienced after a laser hair removal session are erythema (redness) and follicular edema (swelling) at the treatment site which may for about two hours. The application of ice or a cold compress will reduce the discomfort and swelling and you may also use an oral, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, such as acetaminophen.

As with any laser or light-based treatment, there is a rare risk for hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin), hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin), and burns. These risks are higher in those with darker or more tanned skin.
